2015-05-17 13.35.03Thanks for stopping by to learn more about Christian Union. We’re a student group at the University of Canterbury dedicated to following Jesus and thinking about the Bible together during our time at uni. We welcome anyone who’s keen to think about the big issues of life – whether you’re a life-long Christian, a brand new believer, an interested explorer, or a committed skeptic. Come along to any of our events and you can be guaranteed a warm welcome and a chance to ask your questions, share your point of view, and think about the claims of Jesus from the Bible.

For Christians, CU offers heaps of opportunities to meet other Christians on campus and grow in your relationship with God as we study the Bible together. For those who aren’t Christians, CU offers a friendly, honest and engaging way for you to discuss the big issues of life and investigate the claims of Jesus for yourself as an adult. It’s also a great place to make new friends and be part of an awesome, growing community. We’d love to meet you, get to know you, and be part of your time at uni.

If you’d like to get involved in CU or you have questions about Christianity, get in touch – we’d love to hear what you think, and to help you consider who Jesus is and what it means to follow him.

Our Mission, Vision and Core Values

Our Mission: To make committed disciples of Jesus Christ at the University of Canterbury

Our Vision: To see a growing community of Christian students committed to knowing and living for Jesus, serving one another, and engaging the whole campus with the life-changing news about Jesus Christ.

Our Core Values – We Are:
Confident in the Truth: understanding, celebrating, defending and living out the truth of the God’s message to us, the Bible. Our confidence is not because we are smart and have worked out the truth for ourselves, but because God has graciously revealed the truth in the Bible.
Urgent in Evangelism: Biblical, creative, engaging and persuasive proclamation of the good news about Jesus
Motivated by Grace: rejoicing in our salvation, prayerfully depending on God, serving one another, loving our fellow students
Committed to Lifelong Mission and Ministry: growing students in Christian maturity so they will look beyond their campus, commit themselves to their local church, and ultimately give their lives to the ongoing proclamation of the gospel wherever God places them

Knowing Jesus, Equipping Students, Engaging our Campus

Knowing Jesus
At Christian Union, we’re all about Jesus! We believe he is the most important person in history – someone who can introduce us to God and change lives even today. We exist to help followers of Jesus learn more about what it means to know him and live for him in every part of life. And because we know Jesus changes lives and brings people to God, we’re passionate about introducing people to Jesus for the first time.

Equipping Students
Christians know that following Jesus is the best way to live, but it can also be hard work at times. As part of CU, you’ll have the guidance of trained, experienced staff and student leaders, plus the support of a great community, to help you grow in your faith, equip you to serve on campus or in your local church, and explore what it means to live for Jesus. Every week, we have heaps of opportunities to meet together – Life Groups (meeting in the evenings to share a meal then look at the Bible together), lunchtime Bible talks, regular social activities, Discovery Groups to study the Bible on campus, training groups to help you develop new skills, prayer meetings, plus plenty of other events and activities.

Engaging the Campus
At Christian Union, we’re passionate about seeing people come to know Jesus for themselves. That’s why we’re not a club just for ‘religious people’. CU is a place for anyone who wants to explore the big issues of life and investigate the claims of Jesus and the Bible. We offer a range of big and small events, resources, and opportunities to talk through the nuts and bolts of the Christian faith in an intelligent, engaging way. Keep an eye out for us – we love helping people to discover that there really is more to life with Jesus!

Our national and international partners

Connect with students, locally and nationally
CU is part of the Tertiary Students Christian Fellowship (TSCF), a national movement with around 40 groups on campuses across the nation. In turn, TSCF is part of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES), which is represented in over 150 countries worldwide. More than half a million students are part of IFES worldwide. By joining CU, you’ll have the chance to connect with students like you right around New Zealand at camps and conferences – many people make connections that last a lifetime!
