CU is a non-denominational group: we are made up of people from all sorts of church backgrounds, and plenty of people who have no church background at all. Everything we believe, do, and teach is shaped by the good news about Jesus, as revealed by God in the Bible.

Beyond this, our core beliefs are the essential truths of Christianity as found throughout the Bible:

  • There is one God, who is three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.
  • God, in revealing himself, inspired the Holy Scriptures so that they are entirely trustworthy and have supreme authority in all matters of doctrine, faith and conduct.
  • All people were made for relationship with God, but we all disobey him and refuse to acknowledge him as God. So we have all become guilty sinners, deserving God’s just judgement and alienated from him.
  • Jesus Christ, God’s own Son, became truly human. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
  • Jesus Christ took on himself the sin of the world when he died on the cross as our representative and substitute. God thereby showed his love for us and provided the only way for us to be forgiven and reconciled to himself.
  • Jesus of Nazareth was bodily raised from the dead by God.
  • The Holy Spirit brings us to trust Christ and repent of our sins, lives in us, and develops our new life in Christ in the fellowship of the Church.
  • Jesus Christ, the living Lord, will return in person as Judge and King.

We share these core beliefs with around 40 other groups like us around New Zealand who join together as the Tertiary Student Christian Fellowship (TSCF). TSCF shares these same beliefs with the groups that make up the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES), which is represented on university campuses in over 150 countries worldwide.

If you’d like to know more about what we believe or why we focus on the things we do, please do get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.
